MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) and Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) each posted double-digit kills at Marquette this afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the University of Connecticut fell to the Golden Eagles, 3-1 in BIG EAST action.
Set scores were 25-18, 25-22, 11-25, 25-23.
After dropping the first two sets UConn came back and dominated set three, allowing Marquette just 11 points. The Huskies held the lead for the entire set and pulled away from the Golden Eagles when they went on a five-point run during the middle of the set (17-7).
During that run UConn recorded points off of Marquette errors and a Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.) kill. The Golden Eagles would get the ball back for just one serve before UConn was able to go on another run, tallying five unanswered points including kills from Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) and Freeman. The Huskies ended the set with a Freeman kill, her third of the set, for the 25-11 victory.
The Huskies battled during set four, staying with Marquette throughout the entire set but came up just short in the 25-23 decision. UConn went on three-point rallies twice during the set, the first off of kills from Kirk and Cayla Broadwater (Williamsport, Md.) and a Kirk service ace which brought the Huskies within two points, 10-8.
UConn's final rally came at the end of the set when the Huskies came within one point of Marquette (24-23) from kills by Broadwater, Quayle and Kirk before the Golden Eagles were able to put the set and the match away with a kill.
Kirk, who led the Huskies with 12 kills against Marquette, has now recorded double-digit kills in the last three matches. Quayle was close behind with 10 kills on the day, while Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) added seven.
Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) had a match-high 24 digs, including 11 during the third set, while Roidt and Quayle each posted seven digs against the Golden Eagles.
Freeman had a team-high five blocks, one solo and four assists, while Broadwater tied her season-high with three (1SB, 2BA).
UConn returns to Gampel Pavilion next weekend when they host St. John's in their Dig For A Cure match on Saturday (Oct. 16) at 2:00 p.m.
