Huskies Drop Five-Set Heartbreaker To St. John's

STORRS, Conn. - The trio of Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.), Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) and Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) led a balanced UConn offense with a combined 43 kills, as the University of Connecticut volleyball team lost a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to St. John's this afternoon in BIG EAST play.
Set scores were 19-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-16, 12-15.
Quayle had a season-high 18 kills on the day, while Kirk tied her season-best with 14.
After dropping set one, the Huskies fought back to take set two, 26-24, led by Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.) who posted a set-high four kills. UConn and St. John's traded points throughout the entire set before Freeman posted her final kill of the set at 23-22 giving the Huskies the energy they needed to finish the set. Quayle recorded the last three points for the Huskies, posting two kills and a service ace.
The Huskies struggled during set three, but came back to take a commanding 25-16 victory in the fourth set with Murray notching a set-high six kills and one ace. After trailing St. John's for the opening five points, Murray recorded her first kill of the set to give the Huskies a 6-5 lead. UConn would hold the lead for the remainder of the set, including a seven-point run to give them an 11-5 advantage off of kills from Murray and Kirk and two Red Storm errors. The Huskies capitalized on four St. John's errors at the end of the set to seal the victory.
The Huskies opened the final set with a three-point run and held the lead three more times, but St. John's was able to pull out the victory, ending with two unanswered points. Kirk and Quayle each posted three kills while Allison Nickel (Pittsford, N.Y.) had one.
Freeman had six kills and a match-high five blocks, one solo and four assists, while Cayla Broadwater (Williamsport, Md.), Quayle and Kirk each tallied three blocks.
Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) had a match-high 17 digs and Murray posted a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs against the Red Storm. Murray also continued her service ace streak, posting a pair on the match.
Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) had 41 of UConn's 49 assists on the night, marking her third 40+ assist match of the season.
The Huskies will close their three-match home stand next weekend when they host BIG EAST opponents Seton Hall and Rutgers.
