WASHINGTON, D.C. - The No. 6 UConn men's soccer team fell to Georgetown 1-0 in a BIG EAST Conference match on Thursday afternoon.
The league contest, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed due to inclement weather, was a key match for both teams. With the loss, UConn moves to 10-2-4 on the year and 4-1-3 in conference play. It was just the Huskies' second loss of the season and their first in conference action.
With its seventh league victory, Georgetown clinches the conference's Blue Division Regular Season title.
The Hoyas' Steve Neumann scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to lift the Hoyas to victory as their record improves to 11-4-1 on the season and 7-1-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Hoyas outshot UConn 10-3 on the afternoon.
Mamadou Doudou Diouf took UConn's first shot of the contest as his attempt soared high of the target. The freshman finished the game with two shots, including one on goal.
UConn's first free kick opportunity came in the 20th minute of the contest as Carlos Alvarez played a great ball into the box where he found Nickardo Blake, who was whistled for the hand ball to halt the Huskies' scoring opportunity.
Georgetown's Tommy Muller had a chance with 20 minutes left in the first half as he ran down a ball into the box but Ford came off his line to make a sliding save as he took control of the ball.
There were not many shooting attempts for either team in the first 45 minutes of play. After a scoreless half, Georgetown earned a direct free kick about 20-yards out as Seth C'deBaca drilled a shot around the UConn wall but his attempt hit the near post to keep the score knotted at zero.
Alvarez made a quick first step towards in the inside of the field and played a solid ball into the 18-yard box to Diouf, who was called for the offside before he was able to get a shot off.
In the 74th minute, Georgetown took a 1-0 lead as Ian Christianson took a throw in and sent the ball into the far side of the 18-yard box. Freshman Steve Neumann headed in his 10th goal of the year to give the Hoyas the lead.
The goal by Georgetown was the first given up to an opponent by the Huskies since Oct. 5 and was just the fifth against UConn all season.
Later in the second half, Diouf drilled a shot in the 76th minute from 20 yards out but his shot was saved by a diving Matthew Brutto. Brutto finished the day with one save in 90 minutes played, while Ford, in his 81st consecutive career start, allowed his first goal since the Oct. 5 match-up at Maryland.
UConn will conclude its 2010 regular season campaign with a BIG EAST Conference match at Pittsburgh this weekend. For more information on the contest, log onto UConnHuskies.com.
