BOCA RATON, Fla. - An RBI double by Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) brought home the game-winning run for the University of Connecticut softball team in the sixth inning against Eastern Michigan, Sunday, at the Miken Classic. The Huskies finished with a 3-2 victory over the Eagles earning their second victory of the season.
The hit was the second game-winning hit for Vaughan this season after she hit a walkoff single in the eighth inning against Minnesota to help the Huskies earn their first victory of the season. This game, Vaughan brought home Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) who started the inning off with a single up the middle, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) and coming home one batter later.
With the victory, the Huskies improve their record to 2-6 on the season as the Eagles drop to 5-8 on the year.
Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) earned her second win of the year pitching the complete game for the Huskies, allowing two earned runs and striking out nine on the day. Saveriano recorded at least one strikeout in each inning throughout the game recording two in both the fourth and sixth inning.
For every Eastern Michigan run on the day, the Huskies answered through the first four innings. The Eagles got on the board first in the third, but the Huskies responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) began the third inning with a walk and moved over to second as Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.) reached on an error by the Eagles' third baseman. The two baserunners each moved up a base after a sacrifice bunt by Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) and Martin scored on a wild pitch to tie things up at one.
In the top of the fourth, the Eagles went ahead once again, but the Huskies responded in the bottom half of the frame. This time, Vaughn began things with a single through the left side. Kathleen Brenneman (Cheshire, Conn.) pinch ran for Vaughan advancing to second on a wild pitch and scoring one batter later after Jess Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) singled to the pitcher, who recorded an error making it possible for Brenneman to cross the plate.
In the sixth, the Huskies went up for good sitting down the first two Eastern Michigan batters in the top of the seventh via fly outs to the outfield while Saveriano got the third out of the game by way of the k.
The Huskies will finish out their time at the Miken Classic Sunday against the host team of Florida Atlantic at 5:00 p.m.
