STORRS, Conn. - With a three-game losing streak in tow, the University of Connecticut lacrosse team looks to snap its skid this weekend. The Huskies host a pair of BIG EAST opponents and are set to take on Villanova on Friday at 6 p.m. before hosting No. 13 Loyola (Md.) on Sunday. UConn's clash against the Greyhounds will begin at 1 p.m. at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
The Huskies have been tripped up since starting the BIG EAST portion of its schedule on the road at Rutgers. UConn has taken on two nationally-ranked opponents in the last three games and will face a similar situation in Loyola (Md.). In Villanova's first season as a member of the conference, the Wildcats are also 0-3 with losses to Georgetown, Notre Dame and Rutgers.
No. 13 Loyola (Md.) boasts a 9-4 overall record and is 3-1 in the conference with wins over Rutgers, Cincinnati and Louisville. The Greyhounds opened the weekend with game against No. 8 Syracuse before heading to Storrs.
UConn, with its 7-4 overall record, must find its offense with team-leading sophomore M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) pacing the Huskies with 41 points. In the midst of an active 23-game goal scoring streak, Lapham has recorded 17 multiple-point games in that stretch. She has been held to just one goal in the last two games after posting back-to-back hat trick efforts at Holy Cross (March 24) and at Rutgers (April 3).
The defense that held opponents to fewer than 10 goals in five contests this season must find its stride again in order to find success this weekend. With senior Jenna Moulton (East Rochester, N.Y.) as the last line of defense with a 10.98 goals-against average the UConn defense is poised to return to its stinginess.
Moulton will take on her younger sister, Ashley, when the Huskies play Loyola (Md.) on Sunday. The younger Moulton has made an immediate impact on the Greyhounds, cracking the starting lineup in her rookie season.
A bit of sibling rivalry will be added into the mix in the weekends' final contest that is also the Huskies' Youth Day. Friday's evening start is Fan Appreciate night with the first 100 fans to receive free pizza.
