LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville Cardinals over powered the University of Connecticut lacrosse team on Friday afternoon at the UofL Stadium. Junior Jillian Cerar (Farmingdale, N.Y.) led UConn with a hat trick while redshirt senior Ashley Mitchelides (Hudson, Ohio) pitched in a pair of her own in the 15-8 loss in BIG EAST action.
It was a 4-4 tie at the break after Cerar scored twice and Mitchelides added the final Husky goal of the first half. Sophomore Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) put the Huskies on the board first with her 18th of the season. UConn led 2-0 before the Cardinals answered with three to lead by one (3-2).
Cerar and Mitchelides regained the lead at 8:28 before Bergan Foley scored to tie it with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. For just the third time this season, UConn entered the break tied.
Foley picked up where she left off in the first half and opened it up to a 6-4 Cardinal lead in the first four minutes of the second half. Mitchelides interrupted the run, capitalizing on a free-position shot at 24:06 to cut the UConn deficit to one (6-5).
Cerar's third goal of the game tied the game for what would be the final time at 7-7 with less than 18 minutes remaining in regulation. Katie Oliverio scored twice to give Louisville a 9-7 lead, starting what would be six unanswered goals by the Cardinals to lead 13-7.
Sophomore Stephanie Norton (Amherst, N.H.) scored the second goal of her collegiate career with 1:40 on the clock. Norton's goal briefly ended the scoring run by Louisville before the home team tacked on two more in the final minute to take a 15-8 win.
In addition to eight saves, senior Jenna Moulton (East Rochester, N.Y.) was one of two UConn players to finish the game with four ground balls. Mitchelides was the teammate to aid the Husky defense with four ground balls.
On the opposite side of the field, Danielle Pawliw also made eight saves, picking up just two ground balls for her ninth win in the cage. It was Foley who led the Cardinals in scoring with six goals and one assist. Entering the game, Foley led the nation in goals per game.
With a 8-7 overall record and 1-5 mark in conference action, Connecticut looks ahead to a noon game at Cincinnati on Sunday.
