STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut baseball head coach Jim Penders has been named the 2010 ECAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his seven-year career after leading the Huskies to a program-record 48-win season.
In 2010, Penders was also tagged as the BIG EAST and NEIBA Coach of the Year, earning both honors for the second time during his tenure. Penders earned both honors in 2006 when he guided his Huskies to a then, program-best 39-win season.
In 2010, the Huskies surpassed the 39-win record in a single season on May 15 and set a program-best 22-game win streak from March 27 - April 28. Penders has also led the Huskies into the National spotlight as they debuted in the National rankings on April 12 and remained amongst the top-25 throughout the season on numerous polls.
UConn set program records in more than nine team categories this season, including wins, hits, at-bats, runs scored, runs batted in, doubles, stolen bases, home runs and innings pitched. After striking out 455 batters in 2009, the Huskies bounced back by retiring 397 via strikeout in 2010 for the program's second-best tally.
