Diouf Nets Two in Huskies' 3-1 Win Over Yale

STORRS, Conn. - Freshman Mamadou Doudou Diouf netted two goals in No. 10 UConn's 3-1 win over Yale (0-1-0) on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 3,787 at Morrone Stadium.
On the night, UConn (2-0-0) recorded nine points on three goals and three assists, as both Diouf and sophomore Carlos Alvarez recorded multiple-point efforts.
The Huskies went ahead 1-0 in the 10th minute of tonight's contest as Alvarez placed a free kick perfectly in the front of the box where Diouf headed the ball past Yale goalkeeper, Bobby Thalman. UConn took a 2-0 advantage in the 17th minute when Jossimar Sanchez scored his first career goal as he drilled a shot from 25 yards out after a Yale defender tried to clear the ball from the 18-yard box.
UConn gave up their first goal of the season in the 20th minute of the contest when Tucker Kocher crossed the ball into the box to find Andy Shorten on the near side of the field. Shorten's header found the back of the net to cut the Huskies' lead to one.
The Huskies answered back in the 40th minute for the fourth goal of the half as Diouf netted his second goal of the game off a deflection after an Alvarez attempt. It was the fourth and final goal of the game as the second half was scoreless.
Josh Ford earned his 44th career victory to move him into a tie for third on UConn's all-time wins list. The senior made one stop in tonight's match and allowed one goal as he faced just two shots on goal in the 90-minute contest. The Huskies' outshot Yale 16-3 on the night, including an 11-2 clip in the first half. UConn also attempted seven corners as Yale did not record any. Thalman allowed three goals and made six saves for the Bulldogs on the night.
The Huskies return to action at Morrone Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 7 in their first-ever match against Manhattan. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
