Strike Out for Cancer Tournament Central
Storrs, Conn. - The UConn women's softball team competed in day two of the Strike Out for Cancer Tournament hosted by Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. and dropped the first game of the day to Maryland (4-4) before exploding for 14 runs in a victory over Kent State (4-8).
UConn sees its overall record move to 1-3.
UConn fell to Maryland in the opening game of the day, 3-1. Sophomore Kiki Saveriano took the loss, pitching six innings. She allowed three runs while striking out three and walking five.
The Huskies scored their first run of the tournament with an RBI single from junior co-captain Amy Vaughan driving in freshman Andrea Huelsenbeck in the sixth. Huelsenbeck started the inning with a double down the left-field line.
With junior Ali Adelman on the mound, UConn fell behind to Kent State, 5-1, early only to storm from behind and score the next 13 runs to earn a 14-5 victory. The 14 runs scored are the most since tallying 14 against St. John's on April 25, 2009.
Adelman settled down after the second inning, allowing just two hits over the remaining four frames. Adelman finished the game with three strikeouts and three walks. She allowed just two earned runs as the Huskies committed three errors in the opening innings.
Senior second basemen Julianne Towers led the way with two hits, two stolen bases, three runs and three RBI. Towers put the game away for Connecticut with a three-RBI triple in the sixth inning.
Along with Towers, the Huskies had four players with multi-hit performances against Kent State. Freshman Andrea Huelsenbeck and sophomore Marissa Guches each had a pair of singles with two RBI. Junior Amy Vaughan finished the day with two singles and two runs while sophomore Kim Silva recorded a single and a triple while scoring two runs.
The Huskies will finish the Strike Out for Cancer Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. tomorrow against a team to be determined based the results from later in the day. UConn will play at either 9:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m.
