Huskies Earn 4-2 Road Victory At Army

Storrs, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey squad traveled to West Point, N.Y. and handed Army a 4-2 defeat to improve to 8-15-4 overall and 7-9-4 in Atlantic Hockey. Freshman Billy Latta (West Chester, Pa.) netted two goals, including the game winner, to lead Connecticut.
UConn sophomore goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) stopped 37 shots to keep him at the top spot in the nation with 819 saves.
With Connecticut up, 2-1, midway through the second period, Latta put the game out of reach for Army with his eighth goal of the season, and second of the game. Latta scored at 9:14 with assists from junior Marcello Ranallo (Burnaby, B.C.) and Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.).
The Black Knights would cut the lead to one with a goal from Make Dube at 15:40 before Latta closed out the scoring with his ninth tally of the season to make it 4-2 with just 1:17 remaining.
The Huskies opened the game with two unanswered goals at 13:18 and 16:12 to jump out to an early advantage.
Senior assistant captain Stevie Bergin (Groton, Mass.) gave Connecticut a 1-0 lead with a short-handed tally assisted from freshmen Jordan Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Rui Encarnacao (White Plains, N.Y.). The goal was Bergin's second of the season with Sims and Encarnacao tallying their 10th and eighth assists of the season, respectively.
Encarnacao and Sims combined to make it 2-0 at 16:12, this time with Encarnacao scoring his fourth of the season with Sims earning his 11th helper on the year. Ranallo also assisted on the play.
Army opened the second period with a power-play goal from Mike Hull at 2:07 before Latta netted his first of the game for the eventual game-winning goal.
For the game, Army outshot the Huskies, 39-27, but Bartus made the necessary saves to earn the victory.
The two teams will play tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. in Hartford, Conn. The game has been moved to the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. while Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum, the normal home for UConn hockey, in Storrs is closed for precautionary measures due to an accumulation of snow on the roof. Admission to the game is free.
