STORRS, Conn. - The UConn softball team hit the road again for four games at the Hofstra Tournament in Hempstead, N.Y. UConn fell to Hofstra in game one, 4-1, and to Columbia in game two, 4-2. Freshman Andrea Huelsenbeck had the lone run for UConn against Hofstra with a solo shot to left field in the top of the second.
Sophomore Kiki Saveriano was on the mound for UConn in game one. She finished the day with nine strikeouts and five walks.
Hofstra manufactured runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth to pull away from the Huskies.
Game two saw junior Ali Adelman starting on the mound. She finished the day with seven strikeouts in six innings. Columbia benefited from the long ball, knocking two home runs. Freshman Katelyn Callahan came on for the seventh inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
Connecticut had chances for the victory but a stellar play from the Columbia right fielder in the fourth inning stifled the UConn offense. With UConn down, 2-1, Junior Amy DeLuca singled to start the inning and was pinch ran for freshman Amy Schiappa.
With Schiappa on second after a sacrifice bunt from classmate Andrea Huelsenbeck, junior Amy Vaughan scorched a shot to deep right that appeared headed for extra bases. The Columbia right fielder was able to make a running, over-the-shoulder grab for the out before doubling up Schiappa headed home.
Columbia blasted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth for the game-winning runs.
With the two losses today, UConn drops to 9-10 on the season. The Huskies will face Columbia and Hofstra again tomorrow at 12:30 and 3:00, respectively.
