STORRS, Conn. - After closing out the non-conference portion of their schedule last weekend, the University of Connecticut lacrosse team will return to BIG EAST action as they host Georgetown on Friday, April 1. Friday's 4:00 p.m. contest will be the 11th meeting between the two teams and just the second conference game for both squads this season.
The Huskies, who ended the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 6-2 record, opened their 2011 BIG EAST schedule against Rutgers earlier this month, with the Scarlet Knights earning a 10-9 victory. Georgetown will be the second of four ranked opponents for the Huskies this season according to this week's IWLCA poll, as the Hoyas were No. 17 coming into the week.
Freshman Lauren Kahn (Nanuet, N.Y.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the third straight week on Monday, after posting seven goals and one assist last weekend against Canisius and St. Bonaventure. Kahn's assist at St. Bonaventure was her team-leading 11th of the year, while she also notched her 25th goal of the season against the Bonnies.
So far this season, eight Huskies have posted double-figure points giving UConn a balanced attack to work with. Four of these players have also tallied ten or more goals, including Kahn, M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.), Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) and Kacey Pippitt (New Canaan, Conn.). This quartet has combined for 75 of UConn's 123 goals this year, while also posting 98 of the 173 points.
Lapham and Tupper also continue to make an impact on the UConn career record book, as they rank in the top-10 in four categories combined. Lapham is currently seventh with 96 goals, fifth with 241 shots and eighth with 113 points, while Tupper ranks third with 56 assists and ninth with 108 points.
As a team, UConn is one of the most balanced squads in the BIG EAST after five weeks of play, as they are just one of four teams to rank in the top-five in at least four out of five categories. Those five categories include goals, assists, ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers. The other teams that also rank in the top-five in at least four categories are Louisville, Loyola and Notre Dame.
Georgetown enters the weekend coming off a tough loss to No. 12 Princeton last Sunday. The Hoyas are 1-0 in BIG EAST play so far this season, as they defeated Villanova, 17-12 in their conference opener. Georgetown has five players in double-figures this year, led by Jordy Kirr who has 19 points on 10 goals and nine assists.
