CLERMONT, Florida - The University of Connecticut lacrosse team was dealt its first loss this afternoon, as the Huskies fell to No. 16 Boston College, 11-8 at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. The Huskies are now 3-1 on the season while the Eagles improve to 5-0.
"This game could have gone either way today, we had a lot of chances in the second half that we just couldn't convert and that hurt us," head coach Katie Woods said. "Again, we had a lull for about a 15 minute span during the first half that really hurt our confidence and we could never get back in the game. We were able to find some things that we need to work on after this game, and that will only help us in the future."
M.E. Lapham led the Huskies with four goals on the day, including three during the first half. UConn got out to a 2-0 lead to start the game with back-to-back goals from Kacey Pippitt and Lapham. The Eagles answered back with a goal in the eighth minute of the first half, but less than 60 seconds later UConn posted its third goal of the game to go up 3-1.
The Eagles would then record four straight goals to take their first lead of the game, 5-3 in the 17th minute of the opening period. Lapham posted her third goal of the game with 12 minutes left in the opening period, but BC would close out the half with three additional goals to go into halftime with an 8-4 advantage.
The Huskies closed the gap to 8-6 at the beginning of the second half as Lauren Kahn opened the second half with a goal less than 20 seconds in. The Eagles and UConn then traded goals to put the score at 9-7, but BC answered with two goals to take an 11-7 lead with 13 minutes left to play.
Lauren Sparks tallied UConn's final goal of the game with less than three minutes left, but that would be as close as the Huskies would get, as the Eagles came away with an 11-8 victory.
UConn will now play Holy Cross on Wednesday (March 9) at 12:00 noon, also at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.
