STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team had a strong showing in the final day of the Husky Spring Invite decathlon, as Jesse Chapman placed first with 6,541 points. Sean Walsh also competed for the Huskies, placing ninth with 5,532 points.
"Both Jesse and Sean had some good performances for their first decathlons at UConn," assistant coach Rich Miller said. "There are definitely things that we will need to work on, but they are continuing to improve each time they compete. There were a couple times throughout the day that they lost their focus, and that is something that you can not do during a decathlon. Hopefully by the time the BIG EAST Championship comes around they will be well prepared and ready to compete."
Chapman, who won the shot put yesterday, followed that up with a win in the discus with a throw of 38.00m and a second place finish in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.25m. His other top-three finishes came in the 110m high hurdles (16.01) and the javelin (47.28m).
Walsh also added to his individual event victory list, as he placed first in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:33.75 this afternoon. Yesterday, he came away with a victory in the 400m dash. Walsh had two other top-five finishes on the day, placing fifth in both the discus (32.96m) and the javelin (44.70m).
The Huskies will continue the Spring Invite tomorrow (April 9) with field events beginning at 10:00 a.m. and track events starting at 11:00 a.m. All events will take place at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on the University of Connecticut campus.
