Huskies Fall At No. 7 Loyola, 17-10

BALTIMORE, Md. - Four Huskies tallied a pair of goals this afternoon, but the UConn offense was silenced by a strong Loyola team as they fell to the No. 7 Greyhounds, 17-10. The contest marked the final game of the 2011 season for UConn, as the Huskies end the year with a 9-7 overall record a 3-5 mark in BIG EAST play.
The Greyhounds controlled the tempo for the majority of the first half, as they outshot UConn 16-12, while allowing just four first half Husky goals. Kiersten Tupper posted the first goal of the contest for UConn as she tied the game at 1-1 two minutes into the game. For the next four minutes the score would remain tied, but the Loyola offense started firing at the six minute mark of the first half when the Greyhounds put up five straight goals to take a 6-1 lead.
Morgan O'Reilly broke up the Loyola streak, posting her 13th goal of the season at the 14:38 mark of the first half to put the score at 6-2, before the Greyhounds once again tallied multiple goals to earn an 8-2 lead with under seven minutes left to play.
The Huskies closed out the first half strong, matching the Greyhounds goal-for-goal as each team tallied two, putting the halftime score at 10-4 Loyola. Lauren Kahn scored for the Huskies at the 24:31 mark, while Stefanie Burra got on the board with just 13 seconds left before the break.
UConn carried their momentum to the opening minutes of the second half as they notched four goals during the first 10 minutes, including two free position goals from M.E. Lapham. Also posting goals during that span were O'Reilly and Jordan Christopher, as they brought the Huskies within four goals at 12-8. With her two goals this afternoon, Lapham extended the UConn record for goals in a season as she now has 55 on the year.
After 11 scoreless minutes the Greyhounds extended their lead to 13-8 with a goal in the 22nd minute, before adding two more for the 15-8 advantage. With under four minutes to play, Kahn and Christopher tallied their second goals of the game as the Huskies climbed back to just a five goal deficit with 2:24 left. Loyola closed out the contest with two additional goals less than one minute apart to take the 17-10 victory.
On the contest, Loyola held an 18-15 advantage in shots, while the Huskies held a 15-11 edge in ground balls and both teams came away with seven draw controls.
Brittney Testa played 56 minutes in goal for the Huskies, posting 10 saves. Today's contest marked the sixth game that Testa has tallied 10 or more saves, and now has 127 on the season.
Lapham, Christopher and Karlyn Tupper each tallied three caused turnovers during the game, while Tupper also added a team-high five ground balls. Jessica Mucci and Kahn each added three ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover for the UConn defense and O'Reilly tallied two ground balls and two draw controls.
