STORRS, Conn. - Behind two late third-period goals from Cole Schneider, the UConn men's hockey team defeated Canisius, 4-3, in Buffalo, N.Y. The Huskies have now won four-straight and five of the last six games to improve to 10-10-2 (9-6-1 AHA). Canisius dropped to 6-13-3 (6-7-2 AHA).
Connecticut went up 1-0 at 16:26 of the first period with Miles Winter notching his fourth goal of the season and Cody Sharib tallying his fourth assist.
The Huskies wasted little time increasing the lead as UConn's top line made it 2-0 just seven seconds into the second period. Sophomore Billy Latta put home his sixth goal of the season with classmates Cole Schneider and Jordan Sims registering their 14th and 11th assists, respectively.
Canisius responded with three-straight goals to take a 3-2 lead at the start of the third period.
The three-goal rally began at 8:53 as Kyle Torrey Lindsay made it 2-1. Scott Moser evened the score at 17:44. The Huskies outshot Canisius, 14-12, in the second period and the two teams went into the locker room tied, 2-2.
Canisius forward Kyle Gibbons gave Canisius its first and last lead of the weekend 44 seconds into the third period.
It looked like Canisius' and goaltender Dan Morrison would hold on for the victory until Schneider's heroics in the third period.
The UConn sophomore wing evened the score with his 11th goal of the season at 11:54 with assists from Latta and senior defenseman Brad Cooper.
With the score tied, 3-3, in the waning minutes, Schneider added his second goal of the night and third of the weekend to put the Huskies ahead for good at 17:44.
Sims and freshman Jacob Poe assisted on the game-winning goal.
Junior goaltender Garrett Bartus and Canisius' Dan Morrison each finished with 29 saves.
The Huskies will host Robert Morris for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday night this weekend at Freitas Ice Forum with the puck set to drop at 7:05 on both nights.
