Marzi's Hard Luck Continues in Loss to Notre Dame

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Sophomore left-hander Anthony Marzi (Berlin, Conn.) dropped to 2-8 on the season following a 4-0 loss to Notre Dame in front of 1,535 at New Britain Stadium on Friday evening. The Huskies have been shutout in each of Marzi's last three starts, despite him allowing just four earned runs over his last 23 innings pitched.
UConn dropped to 28-25-1 overall and 15-11 in BIG EAST play, while the Fighting Irish improved to 29-24 and 14-12.
Marzi's night ended after allowing two runs on six hits in six innings pitched. He walked just one and struck out four, while surrendering both runs in the fourth inning.
Freshman RHP Pat Connaughton started for Notre Dame and went three shutout innings, scattering three hits. Sophomore RHP Sean Fitzgerald (7-3) came out of the pen to earn the win. He tossed three scoreless and gave up just two hits. The ND pitching staff totaled 10 strikeouts in the game.
Senior first baseman Ryan Fuller (Old Lyme, Conn.) registered two of Connecticut's seven hits. Junior second baseman Frank DeSico powered the Irish offense with a 3-5 night and three RBI.
The regular season finale is tomorrow at 11:00 am at J.O. Christian Field.
