Middletown, R.I. - Led by a 3-under par 69 from junior Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.), the UConn men's golf team improved 12 strokes from Round 1 to Round 2 Monday and stands sixth at the Adams Cup of Newport.
Wiatr's second sub-70 round of the young season gave him a 73-69-142 (2-under) total, good enough for an individual tie for fourth in the 90-player field at the Newport National Golf Club. The tournament finishes with the third round on Tuesday.
Each of the UConn players either maintained or improved his score from Round 1 to Round 2, both of which were played on Monday. Sophomores Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) and John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) had matching 76-76-152 scores to be part of a tie for 28th place, while freshman Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded 82-74-156 to tie for 53rd place, and sophomore Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) had 87-79-166 to tie for 84th place. Playing as an individual, UConn junior Dane Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.) shot 80-74-154, and stands tied for 42nd place.
Ryan Fricker of Bethune-Cookman College is the tournament's individual leader with an 11-under 67-66-133.
UConn's aggregate 307-295-602 is just four strokes out of the top five in the 16-team event. UCF tops the field with a sizzling 11-under 273-292-565, followed by Bethune-Cookman (580), Hartford (595), Rhode Island (595), and Bryant (598). Temple and Johnson & Wales are deadlocked for seventh, just one stroke behind the Huskies.
