The UConn women's lacrosse team wrapped up its fall schedule this past Saturday with a play day at Manhasset High School in Long Island, N.Y. The team participated in four fall ball tournaments and one scrimmage against Fairfield University throughout their fall season, which began on Sept. 12 with the annual UConn Alumni Game. While enduring many trials and tribulations during the long weeks of practice and the lengthy play days, the hard work instantly became worthwhile when they shined in their last play day over the weekend.
The team won three out of their four games against USC, Michigan and UMass. In UConn's one loss, a one-goal defeat to the Stony Brook, there was considerable improvement from when the Huskie and Sea Wolves stepped onto the field at the Boston College play day a week earlier.
"I'm proud to say we made strides as a team throughout our fall games," senior captain attacker Grace Presnick (Suffield, Conn.) said. "To finish the fall season on Long Island with wins against some great programs is definitely an accomplishment."
While the team is entering its rigorous off-season training sessions, the Huskies' goals for their spring season are officially set into motion. Connecticut women's lacrosse coach Katie Woods is determined to keep her players on the right track to succeed.
"I will be really excited for what can happen in the spring if we commit and decide to work hard and bring the energy and the focus to our off-season training, " said Woods. "We have a really tough schedule, but I think we need to grasp the understanding of what needs to go into it to reach our goals."
That goal is to once again become a contender in the Big East Conference Tournament and take the title for the first time in program history. Connecticut has qualified for the tournament in the past two seasons under Woods, who has guided the Huskies to at least 10 wins in each of the last three years.
This team is known in the conference for its ability to fight through adversity, and this is one trait that UConn plans to keep consistent in the upcoming months before season. With the understanding that they will only get out what they put in, the Huskies plan to greet every day as a challenge to be conquered and perform "+2" in every aspect of their training this season.
