STORRS, Conn. - Following a split with Rutgers in its first home weekend of American Athletic Conference play, the University of Connecticut baseball team is set to play a pair of midweek games against Boston College and Yale. The Huskies will first take on the Eagles at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Tuesday, April 1 at 3 p.m. before facing the Bulldogs on Wednesday, April 2 at J.O. Christian Field at 3 p.m.
UConn (12-12) is coming off an 11-4 victory over the Scarlet Knights at home on Saturday. Senior Anthony Marzi (Berlin, Conn.) picked up his third win of the season after tossing 7.0 innings, surrendering just five hits and two runs, while striking out six. Sophomore Bobby Melley (Barnstable, Mass.) paced the Husky offense, collecting two hits and a team-high four RBI in Connecticut's victory. Melley was placed on the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll for the second consecutive week after posting a 5-for-9 week with a .692 OBP and seven RBIs.
Tuesday's game will mark the 116th meeting between UConn and BC, with the Huskies holding a 63-52 all-time series edge. The two squads last met in the 2013 season, when the Eagles downed the Huskies, 7-4, at J.O. Christian Field. Connecticut out-hit BC, 9-6, for the game and led 4-3 in the seventh but was unable to hold the lead and fell to their former conference rivals for the sixth time in 10 games.
This season, Boston College is off to a 7-18 overall start, including a 1-11 record in ACC play. As a team, the Eagles sport a .227 batting average and have hit three home runs. Logan Hoggarth (.276) leads the team in batting average and is one of three starters to boast at least 10 RBI on the season. The BC staff has compiled a 4.26 ERA and has registered 152 strikeouts in 221.2 innings.
On Wednesday, the Huskies will take on in-state rival Yale for the 62nd time in a series that dates back to 1943. Overall, UConn owns a 39-21-1 series edge, but fell, 15-5, to the Bulldogs last season despite a sixth-inning grand slam from Bryan Daniello (Norwalk, Conn.).
Yale is 7-9 in 2014, including a 3-4 road record. The Bulldogs are led offensively by Jacob Hunter who owns a .339 batting average and a team-high 12 RBI. On the hill, Chris Lanham is 3-0 with a stellar 2.91 ERA in 21.2 innings pitched.
Following midweek action, UConn will play two against Bryant and one against Stony Brook this weekend at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn. in the 2014 College Baseball Classic.
