STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team unveiled its 2015 schedule on Monday, announcing six home games and 10 away contests for this spring.
UConn, which has won at least ten games in each of the last three seasons under fifth-year head coach Katie Woods, will face seven opponents that finished last year with a winning record and five schools that qualified for the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies open regular season play on the road against James Madison. The Dukes lost to Connecticut, 14-13, in overtime last season and are one of eight nonconference opponents who UConn will play in 2015 for the second straight season. Last year, Connecticut went 4-3 away from the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
Following UConn's home opener against Dartmouth (Feb. 21), the Huskies travel to New York to take on former Big East foe Syracuse. The Orange, who lost to Maryland in the NCAA Championship last spring, are unbeaten all-time against the Huskies. The two teams last met in the semifinals of the 2013 Big East Tournament in a game that Syracuse won, 19-6.
Connecticut begins Big East play on March 29 against Cincinnati in the first of four road games against conference opponents. Marquette (Apr. 4), Temple (Apr. 8) and conference newcomer Florida (Apr. 18) makeup the list of Big East opponents that visit the Huskies in the spring, and UConn's game against the Gators, set for Apr. 18, will be the Huskies' first all-time meeting against a Florida program that won 18 games last year.
Vanderbilt, who joined Florida as an associate member of the Big East for women's lacrosse this year, hosts the Huskies on Apr. 12, and three days later UConn plays Georgetown on the road. The Hoyas eliminated Connecticut in the Big East semifinals last year.
Cincinnati (March 29) and Villanova (Apr. 25) round out the remainder of UConn's conference schedule, which concludes five days before the start of the 2015 Big East Tournament (Apr. 30-May 2). The Huskies have qualified for the conference tournament in each of the past two seasons after reaching the postseason for the first time ever in 2013.
