NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The UConn women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss in Big East play this season on Sunday, falling to Vanderbilt on the road, 10-9, in overtime. The setback snapped Connecticut's four-game winning streak and dropped the Huskies to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in conference action, while the Commodores improved to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in league play with the win.
Commodore sophomore midfielder Caroline Peters tallied the game-winner 2:10 left in the first sudden victory overtime period after receiving a pass from Amanda Lockwood. Sunday marked the second overtime game for the Huskies this season, and the loss snapped a two-game road winning streak for UConn.
Connecticut attacker Katherine Finkelston (Leonardtown, Md.) had a chance to give the Huskies a victory in the first overtime period, but her shot from close range was saved by Vanderbilt keeper Maddie Kratz with just seconds remaining in the period. The UConn junior finished with one point on one assist.
The two teams traded goals in the early going, and Vanderbilt grabbed a 3-2 lead with just under 14 minutes left in the first half after Emma Dagres found the back of the net for seventh time this season.
UConn junior midfielder Alyson Fazio (Methuen, Mass.) evened the match at three two minutes later, scoring from the left side of the 8-meter arc, and the Huskies added two more goals in the first half to take a 5-3 lead into the break. The Connecticut defense didn't allow a goal for the final 13:59 of the period.
Goals by UConn attackers Jacqueline Jordan (Los Gatos, Calf.) and Carly Palmucci (Herndon, Va.) pushed the Husky advantage to 7-3 out of the break, but the Commodores slowly chipped away at the Connecticut lead for the remaining 25 minutes.
Vanderbilt cut its deficit to one (8-7) on a goal by Peters halfway through the second half, and the Commodores evened the match at eight following a score by Amanda Lockwood with 5:37 left in regulation.
The Huskies struck first in the opening overtime period, as Palmucci once again found the back of the net, but Vanderbilt answered 17 seconds later after Alexa Kunowsky scored her 23rd goal of the year.
Connecticut junior goalkeeper Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) recorded eight saves in the loss for the Huskies, who were outshot, 25-24, for the match. The Commodores controlled 14 of the 23 draw controls, and UConn forced 20 Vanderbilt turnovers.
UConn is back in action on Wednesday when it faces Big East rival Georgetown on the road. The match gets underway at 4 p.m.
