AMHERST, Mass. -- Competing in its first meet of 2015, the UConn women's cross country team collected a first-place finish at the 2015 Minutemen Invitational, hosted by UMass, on Saturday afternoon. UConn finished the meet with 25 points, topping Boston College (54) and Vermont (64) for the top spot.
Connecticut averaged an 18:07.20 second time as a team in the 5K race, which was over 14 seconds better than the nearest competitor.
Senior tri-captain Emily Durgin led the way for the Huskies, crossing the finish line in second with a 17:39 finish. Laura Williamson followed up with a bronze medal (17:59), finishing just ahead of teammate Maggie Christe (18:09), who checked in in fourth.
"We put together a good effort today," said second-year head coach J.J. Clark. "Durgin provided great up-front leadership, followed by Williamson, who ran well. Maggie Christe put together the best cross country race of her college career. It was a good start and we look forward to continuing our progress moving forward."
Trasnfer Alexis Panisse notched a top-10 finish in her UConn debut, grabbing seventh (18:18), while rookie Haley Hasty (18:35) took 14th. Senior Abby Mace was the fifth Husky in the top-10 with an 18:31 finish. Additionally, Lisa Zimmer (18:45), Ericka Randazzo (18:52), and Emily Howard (19:11) picked up top-35 results.

Overall, UConn entered the new season with a roster of 28, including 11 newcomers. The squad welcomed freshmen Courtney Ackerley, Mary Monda Oewel, Kelsey Swanson, Randazzo, Hannah Parker, Lindsey Kane, Hannah Fleming, Spencer Hayes, and Hasty to campus for the start of the 2015-16 academic year on Aug. 31.
After a 13-day break, the team returns to action when it heads to Boston, Mass. to compete in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown set for Saturday, Sept. 25.
