UConn Competes at 2016 NYC Gotham Cup on Friday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The UConn women's track and field team competed in its third meet of the 2016 indoor season on Friday, Jan. 22 when it posted four individual first-place finishes at the NYC Gotham Cup at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.

"Our good performances continued as we had four event wins and several personal-bests," said second-year head coach J.J. Clark. "I'm starting to see an intensity in our team that is critical to have as we move throughout the season."
Sophomore Katie Foley shined in the 800m run, posting a season-best 2:12.11 time en route to a first-place finish. In the 1,000m run, junior Maggie Christe took eighth with a time of 2:58.61.
The Huskies earned another gold medal in the 5,000m run when sophomore Meredith Mistretta won the event with a time of 17:43.25.
Senior Deysha Smith-Jenkins paced the squad in the 200m dash, grabbing seventh with a time of 24.95 seconds, while Sarah Bowens posted a season-best 25.22 second result on her way to ninth overall. Smith-Jenkins followed up the performance with a sixth-place finish in the 400m dash, checking in at 56.13.
A pair of Huskies collected top-10 finishes in the 60m dash, led by a bronze-medal performance from junior Taylor Anderson, who finished in 7.57, just ahead of Bowens (7.72), who posted a season-best time.
UConn's 4x400m relay team (Bowens, Smith-Jenkins, Paris Taft, Sydnee Over) impressed in the event, winning with a time of 3:44.24, which was over two seconds faster than the nearest competitor. In the 4x800m relay, Connecticut's 'A' squad (Hannah Parker, Kelsey Swanson, Laura Williamson, Lisa Zimmer) collected the team's fourth first-place finish with a time of 8:58.79.
Senior Alexis Panisse was the top finisher in the 3,000m run, taking seventh with a time of 9:54.21, while teammate Laura Williamson (10:00.77) narrowly missed a top-10 finish, grabbing 11th overall. Ashley Wiggins collected a 10th -place finish in the 60m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 9.12.
On the field, Saija Bikanova finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.65m, while Megan Reese matched a career-best with a 3.60m leap in the pole vault on her way to a fourth-place result. In the event, Lindsay Carbone (3.45m) and Nicole Kelly (3.30m) took seventh and 10th, respectively. Bikanova also earned a top-10 finish in the long jump with a 5.78m mark.
Senior Odrine Belot continued a strong final indoor season with a fifth-place season-best 12.08m result in the triple jump. Kelly Myers notched a season-best 13.47m throw in the shot put, taking second overall, while sophomore Kelli Thomas took second in the weight throw (16.55m), finishing ahead of Megan Chapman (14.47m).
The Huskies competed at the event a season ago, collecting a pair of first-place finishes in the unscored meet, which was held at The Armory. Connecticut participated in three events at the historic venue, including the 2015 American Athletic Conference indoor championship where it took first overall.
Friday's meet marked the first of two indoor competitions in the state of New York that UConn is scheduled to compete in in 2015-16.
Next up, the Huskies will head to their fourth meet of the indoor season when they participate in the Terrier Classic on Friday, Jan. 29 in Boston, Mass.
