Men's Track and Field Opens 2016 Indoor Campaign

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The UConn men's track and field team opened its 2016 indoor season with seven first-place finishes on Saturday, Jan. 9 at the 34th annual Yale Invitational in New Haven.

"We had a lot of guys really do a nice job in the opener," said head coach Greg Roy. "It was a solid day as we started out our indoor season and I look forward to continuing the development of our team as we move along in the winter."
Connecticut shined in the 500m run, taking the top two spots, led by sophomore standout Trenten Beram, who finished in 1:03.83. Teammate Chinedu Amonu followed up with a second-place finish, crossing the line in 1:04.00.
Two freshmen, Kyle Barber (1:55.22) and PJ Garmon (1:55.83), started their collegiate careers off on a high note, finishing second and third in the 800m run, respectively. Upperclassman Nick O'Leary finished seventh in the event with a 1:58.46 result.
The Huskies took three of the top five spots in the 1,000m run, led by a gold-medal performance from freshman Chris Heydrick (2:29.30). Senior David Cotton (2:32.12) took second, while Parker Timmerman (2:35.02) nabbed fourth. Patrick Begley collected a top-10 finish in the mile run, checking in in 4:37.33.
Stephon Henry was dominant in the 60m hurdles, winning both the prelims (8.23) and the finals (8.16), while the Huskies' `A' 4x400m relay squad collected a first-place finish in the event with a 3:18.12 second finish that was over four seconds faster than the nearest competitor.
Both Husky squads ran well in the DMR, as the `C' relay squad (Garmon, Kyle Trocki, Barber, Heydrick) won the event (10:01.55), while the `A' (Nick Bertoline, Aaeron Sykes, O'Leary, Cotton) team took second (10:07.28). Freshman Jordan Lumpkins took third in the high jump in his first collegiate meet, posting a 1.94m leap.
Senior Tim Murphy won the pole vault with a 4.80m leap, while teammates Ian Bergere (4.65m), Chandler Ives (4.65), Patrick Meyer (4.35m) and Caleb Kasupski (4.35) all finished in the top-10 of the event.
In the long jump, Demario Gray was the squad's top finisher, collecting sixth with a 6.48m leap. Senior captain Oluwatosin Edwards opened his season with a win in the weight throw with a 19.54m toss, while fellow captain Chris Ackell nabbed third with a throw of 17.40m. Freshman Sebastian Castano opened his Husky career with an 11th-place finish in the event with a toss of 14.62m. Edwards also grabbed a top-10 finish in the shot put, finishing with a result of 14.18m.
UConn is competing in its third-ever season in the American Athletic Conference after picking claiming the inaugural indoor crown in 2013 and taking third at the indoor league meet a season ago.
The Huskies continue their indoor slate on Saturday, Jan. 16 when they travel to Staten Island, N.Y. to participate in the Great Dane Classic.
