UConn Loses AAC Match at Houston, 5-2

HOUSTON, Texas - The UConn women's tennis team opened their two-match road swing through Texas on Friday falling at Houston, 5-2, in an American Athletic Conference dual match. The Huskies fall to 4-3 with the loss and are 0-1 in the AAC.
The Huskies lost the doubles point after a tough battle where two of the three matches went to a tie-breaker. The team of junior Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) and freshman Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) opened with a 6-4 win over Angela Lorenzo and Marnie Stokes.
The team of senior Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) lost a tough battle with Despoina Vogasari and Rocio Martin, 7-6 (7-3). The deciding match was at #2 where Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) and Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) came up short, falling 7-6 (8-6) to Tina Rupert and Maria Cardenas.
In singles, Flanagan pulled the match even at 1-1 by opening with a 6-2 and 6-1 win at #6 over Stokes. UConn then jumped up 2-1 thanks to a win at #3 singles where Pletnyeva defeated Martin, 6-3 and 6-2.
The Cougars pulled even after Rupert defeated Alderman at #2 and went up with a win by Lorenzo at #5.
Houston clinched the match at #1 as Vogasari fought off Stosljevic in three sets. The UConn senior won the first 6-3 but fell 6-2 and 6-4. At #4, Cardenas battled Fitz-Randolph to a three-set win, 6-7 (8), 6-2, 10-6.
The Huskies will head to Dallas on Sunday where they will face SMU in an AAC match-up.
