GREENVILLE, N.C. - The UConn women's tennis team opened their final weekend of the regular season falling to East Carolina, 4-2, in an American Athletic Conference match-up Saturday afternoon. The Huskies even their record at 9-9 but fall to 0-4 against AAC teams this season.
"We lost a heartbreaker to ECU today," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "Our doubles started off strong, with a solid win at number two, and a comeback win at number three. Heading into singles we felt pretty confident, but we lost a few really close matches. Lizzy battled through the flu and played very well to win in both singles and doubles. Looking forward to a bounce back win with Cincy on Sunday."
The Huskies grabbed the 1-0 lead thanks to winning the doubles point. After falling at No.1, UConn stormed back to win at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the point. Junior Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) and sophomore Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnista, Ukraine) posted a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Michelle Castro and Annija Veinsteina. The duo improved to a team-best 16-8 on the season and are 7-3 over their last 10 matches.
At No. 3, junior Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) and freshman Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) battled their way to a 6-4 win over Sarah Sarjoo and Maria Storozheva to clinch the point. The team of Flanagan and Lazaro improved to 7-3 playing together this spring with the win.
In singles play, Pletnyeva was the lone UConn winner as she won her fifth straight match and improved to 24-7 on the season. At No. 3, the sophomore defeated Storozhea 6-4 and 6-3 to improve to 9-1 over her last 10 matches.
The Huskies close out the regular season on Sunday facing AAC foe Cincinnati at 12 noon at ECU.
