New York, N.Y. - Three Huskies pegged BIG EAST field hockey weekly awards following a 2-0 week for the No. 1 UConn field hockey team. Senior Charlotte Veitner and freshman Margot van Hecking Colenbrander were tabbed the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, while senior Karlie Heistand was named to the honor roll, as announced by the league on Monday.
At the forefront of a record setting afternoon, Veitner knocked in three goals and tallied four assists as UConn set a program-high in goals scored, defeating Villanova 12-0 on Friday. The forward's first tally in the tilt was one to remember as it etched her name into the top spot of the UConn record book, passing Lauren Henderson's 97 career goals. The forward also set a BIG EAST record, alongside her classmate Casey Umstead, in both points scored (10) and assists tallied (4) in a single conference match. Against No. 14 Princeton, Veitner continued to be an offensive juggernaut for the Huskies as she tallied her fourth hat-trick, second of the weekend, of the season to seal the Huskies seventh top-20 victory of the season, 5-3. Overall, the senior tallied 17 points (6g, 5a) on the weekend, giving her a conference leading 49 points (19g, 11a) in 12 games. And after surpassing the program record of 97 goals, Veitner now holds UConn's top spot in points (267), goals (103) and assists (61).
In a pair of victories, the freshman defender continued to make plays on both sides of the field, tallying 10 points (4g, 2a) on the weekend. Following the opening goal by Umstead, van Hecking Colenbrander got in on the action, tallying back-to-back goals within minutes of each other. On defense, van Hecking Colenbrander and her teammates outshot Villanova, 34-3, and held the edge in penalty corners, 16-3, with six of the Huskies shots coming off the stick of the freshman. Overall, the defender tallied her first career-hat trick as the Huskies defeated the Wildcats, 12-0. Against No. 14 Princeton, van Hecking Colenbrander picked up the matches first tally at 1:58, as the Huskies outlasted the Tigers, 5-3.
Playing two complete games for the Huskies, Heistand was part of a defense that shutout Villanova, in a record setting afternoon, 12-0. Outshooting the Wildcats, 34-3, UConn improved to 13-0 on the season and 7-0 against top-20 competition, while picking up its seventh shutout of the season. Heistand has played a complete game in all 13 games started this season. The senior owns one goal for two points this fall.
UConn will wrap up its three-game road swing at Liberty on Saturday, October 14 in BIG EAST action. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
