UConn Holds Off Marquette 17-14

STORRS, Conn. - Seven points apiece for senior Jacqueline Jordan (Los Gatos, Calif.) and junior Grace Nolan (Marcellus, N.Y.) boosted UConn to a 17-14 victory over Marquette on Wednesday at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
The Huskies (5-8, 2-4 Big East) and the Golden Eagles (4-10, 2-4 Big East) were scoreless through the first five minutes of the game before Marquette took the first lead at 24:10. Sophomores Anna Costello (West Hartford, Conn.) and Lexi Kenneally (Wayne, Pa.) each earned a tally to put the Huskies ahead 2-1.
The two teams traded on and off scoring with UConn pulling ahead by one and then Marquette evening up the score. The Huskies led the Golden Eagles 9-7 at the half. Nolan led the first-half scoring with a hat trick. She capped off her day with four goals and three assists.
UConn's offense exploded, in a good way, at the start of the second half as the Huskies scored five unanswered goals to claim the largest lead of the day, 14-7. Sophomore Cait Leary (Suffern, N.Y.) scored first for the Huskies out of the break. She finished the day with a pair of goals, as did senior Maggie Tripodi (Syracuse, N.Y.).
Jordan tallied two goals in that five-goal scoring spree. She led the team with five goals, four of which came in the second half.
Marquette snapped its 10-minute scoring drought to get on the board in the second. MU's leading scorer Julianna Shearer added another on the board for the Golden Eagles with 19:24 to play as she finished up with five goals and two assists for Marquette.
With UConn ahead 16-9 with 15 minutes left to play, Marquette went on a tear and scored five-straight to put the Golden Eagles within two scores with six minutes left up on the clock. UConn held Marquette scoreless for the remainder of the game and Jordan added an insurance goal for the Huskies with 2:02 to play.
Freshman goalkeeper Grace Beshlian (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded eight saves, six in the second half, against the Golden Eagles on Wednesday.

The Huskies hit the road for two league matchups, first at Cincinnati on April 15 and then at Villanova on April 22.
