STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team lost a hard fought battle with Bryant on Sunday afternoon, 4-3, in their first match of the spring season on their home courts on campus. The Huskies saw their three-match win streak end as they fall to 8-9 on the season.
The Huskies grabbed a 1-0 lead thanks to taking two of the three doubles matches to start the day. The senior-sophomore team of Arnaud Valentin (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) defeated Artur Jakubowski and Scott Plutt, 6-4. The duo has won four-straight playing together this spring.
UConn clinched it at the No.1 spot as seniors Parker Goldstein (Marietta, Ga.) and Christopher Toner (South Hamilton, Mass.) posted a 7-6 (2) win over Matt Kuhr and Nick Lamart, winning their third-straight together and improving to 6-7 on the season.
In singles play, four of the six matches all went to three sets. Bryant won four-straight to clinch the match, taking the No.1, 3, 5 and 6 matches. Goldstein wound up a double winner on Sunday, battling his way to a three-set win at No.2 over Oliver Welsh. Goldstein won the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second in a tie-break, 7-6 (2). He rebounded and answered with a 6-4 win in the third.
At No. 4, sophomore Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) topped Lamart in three sets as well. Warren won the first set 6-3 but dropped the second set 7-5. He fought off Lamart in the third to win 7-5 and even his season record at 12-12.
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, April 8 when they host Villanova on the Storrs campus courts at 12 noon.
