Huskies Finish Play at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. ââ'¬" The UConn men's tennis team spent the weekend playing in the Quinnipiac Invitational against the host Bobcats, Fairfield, Fordham, Marist and Wesleyan.
UConn junior Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and freshman John Michael Holtmann (Miami, Fla.) both earned opening round victories in the singles draws. Hill used three sets to take down Fairfield's Allan Magid. After falling in the first set, 6-4, he bounced back to win 6-3 and 10-4. Hill lost a tough three-set battle with Finn Kemper of Fordham in the next round, 2-6, 6-1, 11-9.
Holtmann won his opening match over Paulo Siracusa of Marist, 6-3 and 6-3 but lost to Steven Chen from Wesleyan in the next round in a tight, 7-6, 7-5 decision. Holtmann did pick up another victory on the weekend in the consolation bracket, beating Alex Stern of Quinnipiac, 8-5.
Sophomores Jacob Appleton (Farmington, Conn.) and Evan Powell (Guilford, Conn.) each won a pair of matches in the consolation bracket. Appleton defeated Jackson Koke of Quinnipiac, 8-3, and Zach Fleishman of Wesleyan, 8-6. Powell posted an 8-5 win over Fordham's Jeremy Chung and an 8-4 win over Alex Makatsaria, also of Fordham.
Hill and classmate Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) posted a doubles win over Max Green and Allen Thomas of Fordham, 6-1.
UConn will have a week off before taking part in the Army Invitational on October 6-8.
