PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The UConn rowing program recorded two top-five finishes at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday, capping-off the fall season with a strong performance from its five competing boats.
The Huskies took part in the 48th edition of the regatta on the Schuylkill River, a location commonly referred to as the home of American rowing. Head coach Jennifer Sanford's team competed for the second straight week, following the Head of the Charles on Oct. 20.Â
The Women's College Frosh/Novice Eight 'A' recorded a fifth-place finish with a time of 15:05.207 - while the 'B' took 13th in 16:46.981. The Women's Club Championship Eight finished eighteenth at 14:40.989.
The Women's Championship Eight 'A' placed fourth on Saturday, recording UConn's best finish of the day after clocking in with a time of 13:47.327. The 'B' boat finished in 14:09.543, just five-tenths of a second from a top-10 placement
"I'm very pleased with how all of our boats raced at the Head of the Schuylkill today," said head coach Jennifer Sanford. "The freshman/walk-on boats faced the most challenging weather conditions and they managed to keep a positive attitude and have a solid row, even in the strong wind gusts and rain."
Sanford added, "The three varsity boats that raced in the late afternoon had better racing conditions and each boat felt very happy with how their boat felt. Given it was our last race of the fall it was nice to see that each boat was able to work together for a solid piece."Â
"If the fall is any indication of how the next phase of training will go, we are in a very good place heading into our indoor segment of training. We have a very hard working group of women that are dedicated to getting faster and stronger everyday."
It is the third straight season that UConn has garnered at least two top-five finishes at the Schuylkill. In 2017, the Women's Championships Eight won a silver medal, while the Women's College/Frosh Novice Eight earned bronze.
