LOS ANGELES - For the second-straight MLB season a former UConn baseball player is a World Series Champion. RHP Matt Barnes (2011) helped the Boston Red Sox win the 2018 World Series with a stellar season on the mound.
Barnes had his best statistical season in his fifth season in the big leagues. The right-hander appeared in 62 regular season games and recorded a 3.65 ERA. The former UConn All-American (2011) threw 61.2 innings and struck out 96 over the course of regular season.
During the postseason, the Bethel, Conn. native appeared in 10 games out of the bullpen and logged a 2-0 record. In 8.2 innings, he allowed just one earned run, three hits and struck out nine.
Barnes wins the World Series a year after former UConn roommate George Springer helped the Houston Astros win the 2017 World Series. Springer was named World Series MVP for his performance.
UConn will look for more hardware in the coming weeks as Nick Ahmed is a finalist for a NL Gold Glove at shortstop. Winners will be announced on Nov. 4.
