No. 5 UConn Falls to No. 2 Maryland in OT Thriller

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Abby Gooderham scored as the No. 5 UConn field hockey team (19-4) fell in a close battle to No. 2 Maryland (21-2) in overtime in the NCAA Second Round Sunday afternoon.
The two top-five teams played neck and neck for the entire game.
Gooderham scored UConn's goal off a penalty corner with a hard shot from the top of the circle at 23:35.
Maryland tied the game two minutes later with a quick pass from the midfield and a tip in to the left of the goal.
The teams went into halftime tied. The Huskies and Terrapins both had chances in the second half, but the defenses held to force overtime.
UConn had a great chance in overtime on a breakaway that was stopped by a Maryland defensive save. On the other end, the Terps were able to find the back of the net at 76:57 with a shot to the bottom of the cage.
The Huskies' defense, backlined by Cheyenne Sprecher, was impressive against the Terps. Sprecher finished with four saves and UConn allowed just one Maryland corner in the game.
The Terrapins held a 12-11 advantage in shots but the Huskies had a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. UConn had a 5-1 lead in corners.
The UConn senior class, which includes Ashley Rich, Julia Russo, Amelia Iacobucci, Amanda Collins and Cecile Pieper, finishes their careers with an incredible 86-7 record. The seniors compiled eight BIG EAST championships, three NCAA Final Four appearances and the 2017 NCAA Championship while in Storrs.
