BOCA RATON, Fla. - UConn junior co-captain Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) shot the finest round of his collegiate career and set a course record with an 8-under 64 on Friday, leading the Huskies to a first-round lead at the FAU Spring Championship, held at the Osprey Point Golf Club in Boca Raton, Fla.
Hervol was superb, firing an eagle, six birdies and playing the Par 4 holes in a tournament-leading 5-under. He holds the lead by two strokes over Hartford's Ambrose Abbracciamento in the huge 114-player field. It was Hervol's 15th round of par or better this season, the 38th of his career, and the 16th sub-70 round of his college career.
Hervol had plenty of support from his UConn teammates as junior Nick Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) shot a 4-under 68 to sit in a tie for third place after Round 1. It was Harrington's 11th par-or-better round this year and the 16th of his career. He has shot five sub-70 rounds.
Redshirt sophomore Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.) was also among the Top 10 with a 3-under 69 that put him in a tie for seventh place. It is Hull's ninth round of par-or-better this season and his second sub-70 round.
Also for UConn, freshman Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) is in a tie for 26th place with and even-par 72, and junior Nabeel Khan was in a tie for 56th place with a 2-over 74.
Two Huskies are playing as individuals --- freshman Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) is part of the tie for 56th place with a 2-over 74, while sophomore Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) is in a tie for 78th place with a 4-over 76.
As a team, UConn had an impressive aggregate 15-under 273 and holds an eight-stroke lead over second-place Lynn in the 19-team field.
The three-round tournament will feature a round on Saturday and a final round on Sunday.
