STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team defeated CCSU 6-1 on Friday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field behind a marvelous performance from sophomore Mason Feole.
Feole pitched seven scoreless innings, limiting the Blue Devils to just three hits and struck a career-high 13 batters. Feole was able to locate his fastball and keep the Blue Devils off balance with his breaking ball that he utilized in and out of the strike zone.
Feole continued a shutout streak for the Huskies starting pitchers the past four games. Chase Gardner (5.2 IP), Jeff Kersten (8.2 IP), Tim Cate (6.2) and now Feole have totaled 28 consecutive scoreless innings for UConn starting pitchers.
The offense capitalized on CCSU mistakes in the early innings. Anthony Prato reached on a single in the first, advanced to second on a balk and scampered home on a ball thrown into left field by the first baseman to make it 1-0 Huskies.
UConn added to the lead in the second after back-to-back walks opened the inning. Chris Winkel provided an RBI double and Mike Woodworth singled into centerfield to make 3-0 Huskies.
Woodworth had a career-day at the dish with a 3-3 performance. It was his fifth multi-hit game of the season and first three-hit contest.
Zac Susi padded the lead by hitting a solo home run to right field in the third. It was the first long ball of the year for Susi and gave UConn a 5-0 lead.
Feole was in cruise control with a streak of nine-straight retired in the middle innings. The left-hander struck out the side on two occasions and shattered his previous career-high of eight punchouts.
The Huskies move to 14-9 and close out Easter weekend at Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford against the University of Hartford at 3 p.m.
