UConn Wraps Weekend at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The UConn Huskies spent the weekend competing at the 124th running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
Saturday's events wrapped up the weekend with senior Seth Zuidema (Midland Park, N.J.) competing in the championship draw of the javelin and he took third in the event with a throw of 68.03 meters (223'2"). A pair of Huskies in senior Craig Hunter (Robbinsville, N.J.) and junior Ian Bergere (Madison, Conn.) competed in the championship heat of the pole vault. The duo both cleared the height of 4.90 meters (16'0.75") to finish sixth, seventh, respectively.
Sophomore Cameron Thompson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) finished second in the college division of the hammer throw with a toss of 60.53 meters (198'7").
In the 4x100 (eastern), UConn's team of freshman Tyler Moore (Hamilton, N.J.), sophomore Nile Uzzell (Somerset, N.J.), sophomore Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) and senior Trenten Beram (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) took the top spot in their heat, clocking in at 40.93 seconds. On Friday, the foursome ran a time of 41.77 seconds in the opening heats.
The Huskies opened the meet on Thursday night as junior Kyle Barber (Fayetteville, N.Y.) ran his fastest time of the season and his career in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (college), finishing eighth. Barber obliterated his previous best time this spring (9:15.40/Florida Relays) with a clocking of 9:04.20. He came into the weekend ranked fifth in the American Athletic Conference rankings, an event he finished second in at last spring's conference championship.
In the 5,000 meters (college), sophomore Ian Mickool (Ridgfield, Conn.) posted a new personal best by cutting 23 seconds off his previous season best time (14:49.31), clocking in at 14:26.37, and finishing 32nd in a large field.
During Friday's field events, Torney was fourth in the long jump (college) with a leap of 7.30 meters (23'7.5"), a season-best jump. Sophomore Ivan Nyemeck (Quebec City, Quebec) also had a season-best jump in the event, coming in 24th with a leap of 6.76 meters (22'2.25"). In the triple jump (college), Nymeck was 12th with a leap of 14.03 meters (46'0.5"). Uzzell took 17th with a jump of 13.55 meters (44'5.5").
Freshman Todd Steuber (Toms River, N.J.) was 19th in the discus (college) with a throw of 44.76 meters (146'10") and 24th in the shot put (college) with a throw of 15.37 meters (50'5"). In the high jump (college), rookie Daniel Claxton (Long Island, N.Y.) was 22nd in the field with a height of 2.00 meters (6'6.75"). In the pole vault (college), sophomore Chris Rough (Stamford, Conn.) recorded a season-best height of 4.55 meters (14'11") to finish 13th.
Also on Friday, in the 4x400 meter relay (heats), UConn's team of Beram, freshman Safir Scott (Greenwich, Conn.), freshman Colt Nichols (Portsmouth, R.I.) and sophomore Tyler Gleen (Trumbull, Conn.) posted a time of 3:17.99.
In the distance medley relay (heats), the UConn contingent of junior PJ Garmon (Billerica, Mass.), Kyle Trocki (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Mickool and senior Parker Timmerman (Brookfield, Conn.) picked-up a 10th place finish with a time of 10:04.54.
The Huskies will now have an extra week to prepare before heading to the University of Cincinnati for the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championship on May 11-13.
