WORCESTER, Mass. - The UConn rowing team competed on Sunday morning against Holy Cross and Boston College at Lake Quinsigamond, earning five second-place finishes - while narrowly missing out on its second-consecutive Irving-Christensen Cup.
The Huskies, one week off their strong performance at the Murphy Cup, raced competitively on Sunday - finishing less than 10 seconds behind Boston College in four of the five races. In the Varsity 8+, the race that decides the Cup winners, UConn placed just five seconds behind the Eagles.
"I feel okay about today's results. We had limited water time this week so each boat had set some specific technical goals to work on in the race," said head coach Jennifer Wendry. "Each of the boats felt they did well in relation to their race plan."
UConn raced in the Second Varsity 4+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and Third Varsity 8+ - placing second in each between Boston College and Holy Cross, respectively.
"We have a lot of room for improvement over the next five weeks once we can get on the water to practice more," said Wendry on the recent winter-like temperatures in Storrs. "I am excited for a solid week of practice in preparation for the Knecht Cup."
The Huskies race in the Knecht Cup (April 14-15) next weekend in West Windsor, N.J. Three more regattas are on the schedule before the American Athletic Conference Championship takes place on May 12.
