MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The No. 19 UConn baseball trailed 4-1 heading into the ninth inning and nearly completed the comeback but fell short with the tying run on third, 4-3.
UConn (27-14-1, 11-7) entered the final frame with just three hits against Memphis starter Hunter Smith but fought back in the ninth. Christian Fedko drilled a one-out, two-run double to centerfield to make it a one-run game. After a groundout moved pinch-runner Thad Phillips to third base, Memphis reliever Riley Cabral notched a strikeout to salvage the final game of the series for the Tigers.
Memphis took the lead for good in the fifth on a three-run home run from Alec Trela to make it 4-1.
Chase Gardner was solid on the hill logging four innings of work and allowing just one run. With Gardner not at 100 percent on the hill, the Huskies went to the bullpen early.
CJ Dandeneau pitched well with three scoreless innings to keep the Huskies within striking distance.
UConn looks to rebound on Tuesday, May 8 at home against Sacred Heart at 3 p.m.
