Amanda Collins was Named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year
STORRS, Conn. – For an unparalleled ninth straight season, the University of Connecticut field hockey team has been selected to finish first in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll, as announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon.
After earning the program's fifth straight BIG EAST regular season title in 2017, the Huskies were selected as the favorites once again earning 49 points and seven first place votes. Liberty, who finished second with 43 points, was the only other program to collect a first-place vote.
The Huskies are currently amid a 25-game regular season conference win streak, dating back to the 2013 national championship season. Since 2012, UConn has strung together five consecutive BIG EAST Regular Season titles and five tournament championships.
In addition, two Huskies were tabbed to the 2018 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team – rising senior Amanda Collins and Svea Boker. Collins was one of the league's two unanimous selections.
Collins, captain of the 2018 squad, earned the distinction of Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year – sharing the honor with Liberty's Agueda Moroni. A 2017 Second Team All-American, Collins led all Huskies with 20 assists a season ago. Her 0.83 assists per game ranked third nationally as she helped UConn's offense finish first in the NCAA in scoring margin (3.57) and second in scoring average (4.24). The midfielder's 15 points (4g, 7a) during conference play last season were a seventh best in the conference and landed her on the 2017 All-BIG EAST First Team. Collins was also pegged the 2017 BIG EAST Tournament Most Valuable player after leading all players with three points in the tournament.
Boker, a two-year starter, joins Collins as a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST team. No stranger to scoring, Boker posted nine points (2g, 5a) in just four conference games for the Huskies. The forward finished last season with 25 points and dished out a career-high three assists against Temple on her way to being tabbed to the 2017 All-Mideast Region Second Team.
The season kicks off on Friday, August 24 when the Huskies visit Northwestern for 1:00 p.m. tilt. UConn seeks out its sixth national championship and looks to defend its 2017 nation title with a tough 19-game slate.
