No. 1 Huskies Defeat Michigan State in Home Opener

STORRS, Conn. – Redshirt senior Cecile Pieper scored twice as the No. 1 UConn field hockey team (3-0) downed Michigan State (1-2), 5-0, in the Huskies' home debut at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
Junior Svea Boker, freshman Karo Kueskes and senior Amanda Collins also scored for UConn. Junior Antonia Tiedtke and senior Amelia Iacobucci tallied assists in the win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher finished with four saves and her second straight shutout.
Collins started the scoring 15 minutes into the game as she sprinted with the ball into the circle and had a cross shot to the left. Kueskes added a goal just over 30 seconds later as she collected the ball in front of the goal and beat the keeper.
Pieper added her first goal of the game at 31:35 with a shot in front of the cage to the right. UConn took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Boker notched her first goal of the season as she tapped a pass from Iacobucci into the left of the goal. Pieper added the final Husky goal at 60:36 off a penalty corner insert from Tiedtke.
UConn held a 27-7 shot advantage and a 12-2 differential in penalty corners.
Before the game, the Huskies unveiled a banner celebrating the team's 2017 NCAA Championship.
The Huskies return to action in Storrs on Sunday vs. No. 5 Michigan (1-2) at noon.
