No. 1 Huskies Score Comeback Win vs No. 5 Michigan

STORRS, Conn. – The No. 1 UConn field hockey team (4-0) came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat No. 5 Michigan, 2-1, on Sunday at the Sherman Family Sports Complex.
Sunday's matchup pitted a pair of top-five programs against each other. The contest lived up to the billing with high intensity play and a thrilling comeback from the home side.
Despite trailing 1-0 at the halftime whistle, the Huskies created the lion's share of the opportunities in the first half with a 7-2 shots advantage.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a tally just under five minutes in and the Huskies responded with quality opportunities.
The Huskies first scoring opportunity came from freshman Abby Gooderham. Svea Boker crossed a pass inside the circle that Cecile Pieper slid to Gooderham. She elected for a backhand shot but it was knocked away by the Michigan keeper.
Redshirt senior Cecile Pieper capped the scoring chances by maneuvering inside the circle and creating a shot that clipped off the post with 6:23 remaining in the half.
UConn picked up where it left off by continuing to create opportunities in half number two. UConn quickly compiled three penalty corners in the opening 11 minutes.
UConn powered through at the 23:11 mark in the second half on a goal from Gooderham, her second of the season. Pieper set up the equalizer with a shot in the circle that was blocked by the Wolverines keeper; Gooderham collected the rebound and scored to even the score, 1-1.
UConn carried the momentum late into regulation with constant pressure on the Michigan defense. After earning their ninth penalty corner of the match, UConn grabbed its first lead of the match.
Jessica Dembrowski deflected a Gooderham shot from the top of the circle to move the Huskies ahead with 5:22 remaining. It was the third goal of the season for the sophomore.
UConn salted the remainder of the game away and earned its 40-straight home victory. The Huskies also extended its nation-leading win streak to 27 games.
UConn finished with a 20-3 advantage in shots.
Up next, No.1 UConn hits the road for a Friday, Sept 7 contest at UMass, followed by a trip to Syracuse on Sunday, Sept. 9.
