No.1 Huskies Take Down UMass, 8-3

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Amanda Collins, junior Svea Boker and freshman Abby Gooderham each scored twice as the No. 1 UConn field hockey team (5-0) defeated UMass (2-3), 8-3, Friday evening.
The Huskies held a 7-2 scoring advantage in the first half, including a 5-0 run to start the game.
Collins scored just 19 seconds after the opening pass back. Graduate student Cecile Pieper made it 2-0 off a penalty corner, and Boker scored less than a minute later after streaking into the circle to give UConn a 3-0 lead at 4:57.
Collins notched a goal at 6:14 and Gooderham made it 5-0 off a rebounds at 18:14. After a UMass goal, Junior Antonia Tiedke scored off a penalty corner at 31:36 and Boker notched a goal off a backhanded shot at 34:26. The Minutewomen added a goal with six seconds left in the half, but the Huskies took a 7-2 lead into halftime.
UMass started the second half scoring before Gooderham notched a penalty corner goal at 50:47. The teams held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Tiedke led the Huskies with three assists while Collins and Pieper tallied two each.
The Huskies had a 27-5 advantage in shots and a 4-2 lead in penalty corners.
UConn returns to action to face No. 10 Syracuse (3-1) Sunday at 1 p.m. The Orange fell in double overtime to Virginia Friday.
