UConn takes singles and doubles flights
HAMDEN, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team opened their season over the weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational and came away winning a singles and doubles flight title at the annual opener. The Huskies as a team posted an impressive 11-5 combined singles record and went 8-2 in doubles play to get their fall campaign off on the right foot.
"This was a great weekend of tennis to start off the season," commented head coach Glenn Marshall. "There were seven very good teams at the tournament, and it was a good test for our kids playing in their first matches of the fall."
In singles play, UConn sophomore Elizabeth Kozyi (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) each claimed a share of the D Flight title by winning three matches each to advance to the final. Kozyi was impressive in her first two matches of the weekend, posting a 6-1 and 6-0 win over Army's Alana Larcombe and then Clara Falxa of Boston University, 6-4, 6-2. She earned her spot in the finals thanks to a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Leanne Kendall of Bryant.
On the other side of the bracket, Rabines opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sacred Heart's Lauren Santarsiero in her first collegiate match. She posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Quinnipiac's Stephanie Yanosov and then got to the finals on Sunday with a three-set win over Army's Sam DiMaio, 6-2, 3-6 and 10-3.
In the A Flight, freshman Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) got a pair of wins in her collegiate debut to get to the semifinals. She earned her first collegiate win by beating Fairfield's Diana Prinos, 6-3 and 6-3 then followed that with a three-set win over QU's Dominique Vasile, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. She just missed a trip to the finals after falling in three to Army's Ana Joyner, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.
In the B Flight, junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) won a pair of matches, beating QU's Payton Bradley 6-1, 6-4 and Fairfield's Anna Komer, 6-4, 6-0. Rookie Julieanne Bou (New Braunfels, Texas) notched her first collegiate win by beating Sacred Heart's Adrianne Alfonso, 6-1 and 6-0.
On the doubles courts, the team of Kozyi and Rabines teamed up to share the B Flight title with teammates Bou and senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.), each winning three times to get to the finals of the flight. Kozyi and Rabines opened their run to the final with a 6-1 win over Army's Abi Waldman and Sophia Suri. They advanced to the semis with a 6-4 win over QU's Layla Rodriguez and Kamilla Nella then to the final with a 6-4 win over Bryant's Arianna Oropeza and Caterina Luisa Rokke.
On the other half of the flight, Perrotta and Bou opened with a 6-0 win over Bryant's Carolina Betancourt and Haley Pollock then beat Bryant again, taking down Gabrielle Bergeron and Kendall, 6-1. The duo secured their spot in the final with a 6-3 victory over Army's Hannah Boubel and Sasha Inchauste.
"All three of our new players had their first wins in singles on the opening day and Julieanne Bou, Luciana Rabines, and Mireille Moreau were excited to start their UConn Tennis careers on a positive note," stated Marshall. "I am pleased with the team's play this weekend, and look forward to our next tournament at Army."
The Huskies will head to the Army West Point Invitational on Sept. 28-30.
