First Husky series win since 2015 season
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Twenty-five would serve as UConns' magic number on the night as they hit that mark in all four sets against Temple. The Huskies took the match with a 3-1 victory, propelling them to 10-6 overall and a pair of conference wins.
The Huskies opened every set with the first points, steadily on the attack throughout the back-and-forth contest. Freshman Caylee Parker (Windsor, Ontario) drew first blood for UConn to open Friday night's thriller. While neither team could truly break away to begin, freshman Anna Petrova's (Voronezh, Russia) set sealing kill established the tone for the rest of the evening.
UConn opened the next two sets with an onslaught of consecutive kills, three in set two and five in set three. The Huskies' strategy had weighed on the Owls by set four, which ended 25-16. The offensive pressure against Temple was led by Parker with 18 kills while R-Sophomore Genna Florig (Portland, Ore.) and Petrova added 10 and 14 kills respectively.
The Huskies balanced out their aggressive offensive approach with equally effective defense. In addition to Parker, four other players nabbed double digit digs against the Owls. Seniors Emma Turner(Winter Park, Fla.), Kennedy Arundel (Chicago, Ill.), Elizabeth Kline (Glenshaw, Pa.) and Iman McGary (Rockford, Ill.) all nabbed 11 or more digs. Freshman Kennadie Jake-Turner etched her name on tonight's match with seven total blocks.
Turner continued her impressive assist clinic, dishing out 52.
Making this triumph a little sweeter was the fact that for the first time in three seasons the Huskies had bested the Owls. The previous win came in the 2015 season when Temple traveled to Storrs to faceoff with UConn.
The Huskies will return home on Friday, Oct. 5th against ECU and Sunday, Oct. 7thversus Cincinnati. There will be special events during or after both matches. Friday's events will include Jonathan's Birthday and Mental Health Awareness Week. Sunday will comprise of a post-match clinic and autographs.
