To compete in annual Nittany Lion Challenge
STORRS, Conn.-After months of mental and physical training the UConn Women's Track and Field team will begin the 2019 indoor season at the annual Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, Pa. on Saturday, Jan. 12. The trip to Penn State will not only kick off an exciting month of competition but officially commence the indoor season which consists of nine meets including the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
"I'm very excited to get the season started as the team has been trending really well. So, we are looking forward to a good start across the board. My goal is twofold; No.1 to be healthy and No.2 to come out making some good marks that will allow us to progress as the season goes."
-Head Coach J.J. ClarkÂ
Historically the Nittany Lion Challenge is the first meet for the Huskies after the conclusion of the cross country season, and UConn has previously had great success. Last season several student-athletes turned out career bests in various events.
In the 1000m race, Allie Alsup and Mia Nahom turned out times of 2:56.77 and 3:06.39 respectively while Nicole Faucette's time of 3:06.39 doubled as a career best and a top-30 finish.
Others carried their cross country successes into the meet in Brianna O'Brien, Mackenzie Pias, and Haley Hasty. O'Brien and Pias concluded the 3k with personal and career bests in addition to Hasty's top-15 finish0
Sprinters—Elise Anderson, Kristina Cherington, and Ashley Wiggins—placed seventh, eighth, and ninth in the 200m with Anderson leading the way.
Decorated shot put extraordinaire Divine Oladipo kicked off her sophomore season with a silver medal with a throw of 16.03m. This would just be the beginning of a phenomenal second year for Oladipo. Overall, UConn claimed three top-5 finishes in the weight throw.
In this year's Challenge, the Huskies will compete against Army, Bucknell, Georgetown, Iowa State, Maryland, host Penn State, Pittsburgh, Point Park, and Virginia. Field events will begin at 11:00 am beginning with the Women's Weight Throw, 20lb. Track events will commence 15 minutes later with the mixed one mile run.
