Vital, Gilbert Named To AAC Preseason All-Conference Team

PHILADELPHIA โ UConn senior guard Christian Vital and redshirt junior guard Alterique Gilbert were each named to the American Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference Second Team, announced at Monday's AAC Media Day.
Vital (Queens Village, N.Y.) and Gilbert (Atlanta, Ga.) were two of just 11 players cited by a vote of the league's coaches, who were not allowed to cast ballots for their own players.
As a team, UConn was picked sixth in the 12-team league, earning 75 points. For the first time in the league's seven-year history, there was a tie for first place in the preseason poll, with Houston (7 first-place votes) and Memphis (4) each collecting 113 points. Defending league champion Cincinnati (1) finished third with 94 points, followed by Wichita State (88 points) and USF (79).
Behind UConn, in order, were Temple (72), SMU (47), UCF (40), Tulsa (36), ECU (20) and Tulane (15).
Vital has played in 96 games for UConn, starting 62, and has scored 1,228 career points, entering his final season as No. 36 on the Huskies' all-time scoring list. His 199 three-pointers made ranks eighth, 77 behind all-time leader Rashad Anderson. Last season, he averaged 14.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game and his .409 three-point field goal percentage makes him the leading returning conference player in that category.
Gilbert averaged 12.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and led the Huskies with 3.6 assists per game last season, playing 25 games and starting 23. He had 20 double-figure scoring games.
Cincinnati senior Jarron Cumberland was voted the Preseason Player of the Year, while Memphis freshman James Wiseman was a unanimous pick for Preseason Rookie of the Year.
Cumberland and Wiseman were also named to the Preseason All-Conference First Team, along with Temple's Quinton Rose, Houston's DeJon Jarreau, and USF's Laquincy Rideau.
Joining Vital and Gilbert on the Second Team are Alexis Yetna and David Collins of USF, Jayden Gardner of ECU and Nate Pierre-Louis of Temple.
It is UConn's final season in the AAC before moving to the Big East Conference in 2020-21.
