Tom Moore Announces Retirement

STORRS -ย After an illustrious coaching career spanning nearly four decades, including 21 years at the University of Connecticut, men's basketball general managerย Tom Mooreย has announced his retirement from UConn. The four-time national champion served as the program's GM last season after he returned to UConn for his second stint as an assistant in 2018-19.ย
"It has been an honor to spend my entire professional life coaching college basketball,"ย Mooreย said. "I'd like to thank all the players I've coached and all the men I've shared the sideline with. Every one of you hold a special place in my heart. My family has made tremendous sacrifices to support my career and I could not have done this without them. Sincere thanks to Coach Calhoun and Coach Hurley for believing in me at the beginning and conclusion of my coaching career. To work alongside two of the greatest coaches in college basketball history was a blessing I could have never imagined when I began this journey. UConn Nation, I am forever grateful to have been a small part of the Basketball Capital of the World for two decades."

Mooreย recently concluded the eighth season of his second stint at Connecticut, 21st overall at UConn and his 39th season in basketball. He has been a part of four national championships (1999, 2004, 2023, 2024) on the UConn bench - most for any assistant coach in the modern era of the NCAA Tournament. As the portal and NIL era has commenced, Moore has taken on a dual role as the program's general manager, fully relinquishing his on-court responsibilities in 2025 to focus on front office duties.ย
During his second stint at Connecticut from 2018-26, the Huskies have enjoyed an unprecedented era of success in an already storied program. UConn is 199-75 overall in that span and won the 2023 and 2024 national titles โ the first back-to-back championships in program history. The Huskies also won the 2024 BIG EAST regular season and tournament crowns and was the champion of the 2026 East Regional, advancing to three Final Fours in four years for the first time in Connecticut history. UConn is one of two teams since the turn of the century to go to three in four and the lone program in that span to make the title game three times in a four-year window. Since 2018,ย Mooreย helped the staff recruit and develop a total of 11 NBA Draft picks, 10 First Team All-Conference players and a pair of All-Americans. Among the Huskies he played a lead role in landing were national championsย Donovan Clingan, Andre Jacksonย andย Alex Karaban, the last of whom became the program's all-time winningest player.ย
A 1987 graduate of Boston University,ย Mooreย immediately took to coaching and joined the staff at his hometown Worcester State as an assistant for the '87-88 season. After a season as an assistant at Assumption he returned to Worcester State as a 24-year old head coach.ย Mooreย spent five seasons at the helm of the Lancers from 1989-94 and compiled a 76-59 record.
Mooreย then joined the UConn staff ahead of the 1994-95 season. In his 13 seasons as an assistant to Jim Calhoun the program recorded its first two national championships while he played a role in developing the likes of Ray Allen, Khalid El-Amin, Rip Hamilton, Caron Butler, Ben Gordon, Emeka Okafor, Rudy Gay and countless other stars.ย
Mooreย moved south ahead of the 2007-08 season to take over as the head coach at Quinnipiac, where he spent the next 10 years. He compiled a 162-146 in Hamden as he led the Bobcats in their transition from the NEC to the MAAC. He was the 2010 NEC Coach of the Year and had four postseason appearances in the NIT, CBI and CIT over a six-year span during his tenure.ย ย
Following his time at QU,ย Mooreย linked up with Hurley for his final season at Rhode Island. After helping the Rams to a 26-8 record and the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in 2017-18, he joined Hurley and returned to UConn.ย
