STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's hockey program announced the 20th anniversary celebration of the 2000 MAAC Hockey Championship during their home game against Rensselaer on Saturday, October 12th. Game time is scheduled for 3:35 p.m. at the XL Center in downtown Hartford.
The Huskies are welcoming home most of the former student-athletes and coaches for a special ceremony recognizing the team's accomplishments. The team will forever be enshrined in the rafters with a banner honoring the championship during the first intermission. In addition, fans can see the MAAC trophy on display on the concourse and can pick up a replica banner and throwback team poster at the game, first-come first-served while supplies last.
"We are thrilled to welcome back many of the student-athletes and coaches from the 1999-2000 team to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their championship season," stated head coach Mike Cavanaugh. "The 1999-2000 season is a terrific chapter in the history of UConn hockey. I think it's great their accomplishment will live in the rafters at the XL Center with a banner, to be joined by many more hockey championship banners in the future."
Just one year after making the transition to Division I, the Huskies began their second of season of play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in 1999-2000. Coming off a 20-win season and a conference tournament semifinal appearance, UConn was poised for a breakout year. Although the team got off to a slow start the Huskies turned it on in December, winning the SNET UConn Classic, putting together a seven-game win streak, and winning 14 of their last 20 regular season games.
UConn ran through the MAAC playoffs with a 5-4 win over Sacred Heart, a 2-0 win over Mercyhurst, and a 6-1 championship game win over Iona on campus in Storrs.
