STORRS, Conn. - The No. 2 UConn field hockey team's season came to an end after a 2-0 loss to No. 9 Princeton in the NCAA Elite Eight on Sunday afternoon at the George Sherman Sports Complex.
In cold temperatures the Huskies were the agressors early with a couple of quality chances from Sophie Hamilton and Maddy Wray at the 6:46 mark in the first quarter.
The game remained deadlocked until Princeton converted on its second consecutive penalty corner at 22:32.Â
The Huskies nearly found an equalizer in the third quarter on its first penalty corner of the match. Abby Gooderham rocketed a shot that was saved by Princeton keeper Grace Baylis, followed by opportunities from Wray and Jessica Dembrowski.
Dembrowski's shot got past Baylis but goal scorer Marykate Neff was on the goal line to make the game-saving save.
Hannah Davey scored early on in the fourth quarter to push the Tigers lead to 2-0 and the Huskies were unable to overcome.
The loss ends the season for the Huskies, closing their record at 19-4 with an 11-4 mark against Top-25 opponents. Seniors Svea Boker, Abby Lucas and Antonia Tiedtke finish out their UConn careers with gaudy statistics. The trio won eight Big East Championships, reached four NCAA Tournaments, two Final Fours and won the 2017 National Championship with a perfect 23-0 record.
